The mission of the Undergraduate Research and Creative Works program at High Point University is to engage students in scholarly, inventive, and imaginative experiences that not only bring academics to life, but which also stimulate curiosity, promote the development of new competencies, foster critical and creative thinking, and provide students with privileged opportunities to add to the sum of human knowledge.
To fulfill this mission, the Undergraduate Research and Creative Works program encourages and supports the establishment of collaborative partnerships between nurturing faculty mentors and enterprising students. Within these partnerships, critical inquiry, brainstorming, debate, and mutual discovery intertwine, leading over time to the production of finished works suitable for publication, exhibition, or presentation in either professional or public settings. In this way, one goal of the Undergraduate Research and Creative Works program is to provide students with inquiry-based experiences that most students don’t receive until graduate school.
At a broader level, a second goal of the Undergraduate Research and Creative Works program is to impress upon students both the philosophical and practical value of thinking critically and creatively, examining problems from different perspectives, asking testable questions, applying research results to real-world dilemmas, and communicating clearly one’s findings, vision, or point of view. This goal underscores High Point University’s twin commitments to the liberal arts and to the professional training of its students.
